sock drawer!

Nothing at all fancy about this, but there's something soothing about opening up your sock drawer and not seeing a jumbled, twisted labyrinth of mismatched socks. Good news: it's incredibly easy to beautify your sock collection.

Given how much I wear flipflops, Toms, or sandals, turns out I don't actually have that many socks aside from the athletic type. So I focused on my husband's socks instead.

The Before:

Not terrible. Could be worse. But could also be better. And lucky for my husband, since he happens to bundle his socks into the same drawer as his shirts, he got a two for one deal :)

During this process I discovered three unused drawers on my husband's side of our closet (gasp!). That's not normal, I know. But this organization project doesn't require new space. It works just the same if you're REorganizing an existing space as it does if you're organizing a new space.

  • Step 1: remove everything
  • Step 2: group in categories (shirts, athletic socks, dress socks, etc.)
  • Step 3: refold and/or reroll
    • For rolling socks:
      • align the two socks so the toes point in the same direction
      • push the toe of the top sock into the toe of the bottom sock so they create a slight cup
      • starting at the toe, roll into the cup and continue all the way up to the top of the socks
    • For folding shirts, you want to be as neat as possible with the creases, and keep everything as close to the same dimensions as possible (easier said than done - see below!)
  • Step 4: put it all back in
    • As you're doing this, think about creating visual sections (even if there aren't actual dividers)
    • For an added bonus, color coordinating is always nice :)

The After:

This is honestly a 10-15 minute project. One thing to remember, this isn't a once and done project. You have to commit to keeping up the aesthetic every time you fold laundry.
